mas. He shall save his people from
thetr sins. Let ua remember this im-
portant tnith this Christmas season,
for there is no name given under
heaven among men whereby we must
be saved, but the riameé' of Jesus.
This Christmas season as we celie-
brate the Lord’s birth and as we seek
to please and honour Him in all that
we do, let wy beware lest we become
too engrossed with gifts, friends and
relatives as to forget the many in
Africa, India, China and Europe that
have not the slightest knowledge of
Christmas, that- have not gifts to
enjoy, much lese any joy in the know~
ledge of sins forgiven due to the fact
that they have never heard of the
‘Christ of Christmas that is able to
cleanse from sin, and to give perfect
happiness and joy such that the world
cannot give. Ag I close this short
message, I wish all of you a Christ
Centered Christmas and a God-Hon-

CARD FROM

Mayor Robinson brought into the
Star office this week, a Christmas
card addressed to himself, but meant
actually for the citizens of the Town

| of Wainwright,

The card was from the Officer
Commanding Lord Strathcona Light
Horse, Currie Barracks Calgary and
inside was a personal hand written
message to the Mayor, the Council
and the citizens, This is a unit that
visited the Wainwright Camp during
the year, and no doubt~ appreciated
the services rendered ‘to tnem by the

with the world, © are filled with the
Christmas sptrit.

What is thie Chratmas spirit? What
is there in the winter season. when
the rivers are frozen and the trees
are bare, and the earth is covered with |
snow to suggest the’ warmth and
glow of Christmas?

The Spirit of Christmas is the spirit
of Christ, It is-He who sheds the
bright rays of love over all the earth.
It is He who makes us understand
that God cares for even the least of
bis children. It is He who calls to the
weary and heavy laden, It is He who
lightens our sorrows with the faith
that we shall see our loved ones again
It is God's will that Jesus the Christ
should be the ruler of our hearts,
and the Spirit of Christmas is a mes-
senger sent from the court of heaven
above to remind us that all who are
wise will lay at the feet of the King
the gold, frankincense and myrrh of
an obedient life,

So let us once agair. gather in His
house, and keep Christmas in the old

traditional way; with songs of praise

and a prayer for those who are home-
less, those who are sick, and those
whom we love wherever they may be,
At the Holy Communion Table Jet us
renew our allegiance to Him who is
our incarnate Lord, As we remem-
ber our friends with gifts, let us re-
member those who are leas fortunate,
for ‘it is more blessed ‘to give than to
receive’.

A Merry Christmas to you all. May

Following a custom that was
inaugurated last year, we are-
not igsuing a paper during the
week of December 29th, which
will give our staff a weil earn-
ed rest. Also during this time
plans are now nade whereby
We will be able to give the
machinery of our production
assembly an annual going over,

Yor the past year we have
continued to publish two papers
each week, as well as a heavy
velume of job printing. This
has meant burning the mid-
night oil for long hours, even as
much as 60 to 70 hours a week,
In that time the equipment has
beco:ne run down with little or
no time to make overhauls.

We trust that our readers and

this matter, and on January
7th you will find your STAR t

Mrs, Santa Claus

Last Christmas. our’ local jewelry
store added two new departments we
never had carried before, One was a
toy counter, where a selection of
movie dolls was featured, The other
~—an optical department—catered to
the trude who could not afford plas-
seg unless they could arrange to pay
for them on credit.

Visiting the shop the night before
Christmas, I watched a tiny little
girl—I'm sure she couldn’t have been

more than six-—standing before the-

already depleted doll counter Her
eyes were big as she looked up at the
one doll still unsold, and there was a
child’s longing in them as she tugged
at the tattéred Overall jacket of her
father, busy talking to the optome-
trist, ;

“Daddy,” she called, her voice
shrill with excitement, “look! Isn’t
it the darlingest thing? Do you think
Santa will bring it to me?”

The man’s tired face’ turned to-
ward her, and a hurt expression flush
ed across it settling hopelessly in the
gray eyes. “’Fraid not, Mary,” he
angwered, “I saw Santa in 4 store
down the street a while ago, and he
said that no’d be about out of every-
thing by the time he reached our
house, Reckon he might have some
sweets, or maybe a rag doll, though.
And he’s promised for sure to bring
those glasses.

“Oh!” Tears were in her eyes, but
she fought them back bravely, and
her worn coat sleeve wiped the last
trace of them away,

“I did so want one of them,”
whispered. “But I’m glad Santa isn’t
going to bring it to me, It meang
that he's found someone else who
wants it even worser than I do, don’t
it, Daddy?”

“Come on, Mary,” the optometrist
called, taking the ifttle girl by the
hand, “Santa tuld me to see what
kind of ylasses you should have, 80's
to be sure he'd get it right, Now just
sit in this chair and do as I say.”

The examination didn’t last long,
and I wag still there when it was
completed, The optometrist turned to
the father. “I'll make a special effort
to finish them tonight,” he said.

He was back soon, a slip in his
hand. “I've fixed it with the man
egement, A dollar now, and a dollar
@ month until the balance of five dol-
lars is paid.”

Mary had returned for @ final look
at the tov. “Don’t you think, Daddy,
that the glasses could come as a
birthduy present, and—oh, I did want
a doll so badly! But—but I won’t cry”

Her father hadn’t heard, He was
busy feeling in his pockets for the
dollar needed for the down payment.
He found a lean wallet, and from it
pulled a quarter and seven dimes, He
counted them over twice, a scared
look on his face, then began a renew-

ashe

‘e@ gearch. Triumphantly, he finally

produced an eighth dime, and handed
the silver to the optometrist.

As the man in overalls and his
elfin daughter started toward the

door, the girl behind the dol' coun-

ter locked at the optometrist, then at
me, a tear in her eye. Then she ran
after the pair. “Wait a toment—
isn’t your name Mary?” she asked,
“Uh-huh?” the liitle girl anawered,
bewildered. ,
“Then I guess Santa meant you.
He was here just a few minutes ago,
and said he had a doll for a little girl

side, looking up at her,
whisper@d, awe in her voice.

As the door closed behind the pair,
the girl took her purse from her bag

and looked inside,

“Mrs, Santa Claus, indeed!”

heard her mutter, “Lucky for me this §
is pay dey, or Mrs. Santa wouldn’t

eat tomorrow.”

St. Francis Was First.
To Popularize Custom
Of Christmas Carols

St, Francis of Aasisi is accredited
as having been one of the first to
popularize the custom of singing
carols at Christmastime. He taught
the faithful and simple melo
dies, and the saying goes that, over-
joyed by the success attending his
présentation of the first Christmas
Crib in 1228, he burat into joyous
vocal recitation of the gospel story,

Hymns in honor of the nativity
were written as early as the 4th cen-
tury, but these monotonous church
chants neither properly nor music-
ally ante-date our modern carols, Ex-
perimentation with modal and inter-
vallic relationships during the 15th
century, together with the folk songs
and minatrelsy of the times, made
definite contributions to the tradi-

music,
Puritan England forbade public

performance of carols; so for a while §

they travelled “underground” by

word of mouth, and “broad sheets” }
printed annually, served to preserve |

the texts with a variance of acouracy.

When the restoration - of . English
royalty voided the Roundhead Par-
liament’s abolition of Christmas fes-
tivities, residents of colonial Boston
placed lighted candles in their win-
dows to welcome the Waits who, re-
@uming the Old English tradition,

went about the cjty singing carols on {
